PRODEF

Project

Protection of the Rights of Children, Women and Other Vulnerable Communities (PRODEF)

2015-2019

Presentation and objectives

The project's mission is to strengthen democratic mechanisms based on the rule of law and access to justice for targeted groups. Its main objective is to consolidate the capacities of civil society organizations and state entities while respecting the needs of local partners and beneficiaries.

Some 100 Canadian volunteers working in the field of human rights are called upon to share their knowledge and expertise. They are deployed in nine countries: Colombia, Costa Rica, Côte d'Ivoire, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Morocco, Peru and Tunisia.

The PRODEF project stands out by leveraging cutting-edge Canadian expertise. It allows Canadians to gain unique experience in international development. At the same time, it contributes to raising awareness and mobilizing the Canadian public on the major issues faced by groups in situations of vulnerability in their respective countries. It particularly seeks to produce a ripple effect in favour of the protection of individuals and groups in the countries of intervention.

Achievements

Since the beginning of the project:

  • several thousand women and girls benefit from a better knowledge and protection of their rights thanks to the support of volunteers;
  • women and girls are sensitized about their rights and prepared to face the different stages of the judicial process;
  • several dozen cases are handled before international bodies in connection with serious human rights violations, including enforced disappearances, trafficking in persons, genocide and sexual violence;
  • legislative proposals are drawn up in favour of the rights of children, adolescents and women and against the marriage of minors;
  • cases are brought before international legal bodies and allow victims to have access to justice, sometimes after more than twenty years of waiting.
